How do we collaboratively engage parents?
For the past few years, I’ve been helping parents learn how to respectfully approach their teachers, administrators and School Board members with their questions.
Every piece of research shows that students are more successful when their parents are engaged and reinforce concepts taught at school. In our diverse school district and we have parents of all varieties.
Since I started teaching, the relationship between parents and educators has disintegrated to feel more combative rather than collaborative. We need to start repairing those partnerships so that we can be more effective in our roles, and promote a goal we can all agree on: improving our students’ education! And we need to start from the top, from the School Board to be an example for the rest of the district. We can do this!
I am committed to being an example of honesty, transparency, civility and respect in every communication. We can choose to start with the one. It’s the right thing to do!
